A Guide to Food “Allergy” Etiquette

Very likely you’ve noticed, but a large growing number of folks with food “issues. ” It could be a food intolerance, a food sensitivity, or even a very serious, life threatening food allergy. I am just one of them. You may be too.

Yet maybe you are not. And perhaps you are now daily encountered with people talking about their food avoidances in the work destination to stores promoting the latest in allergy-free products, and are even informed not to bring your selected foods to schools or potlucks for the reason of a tiny minority that might have an negative reaction to such foods. Allow myself tell you, no-one selects to have food issues. Parents do not choose for their sons or daughters to visit into anaphylactic shock when exposed to peanuts, dairy or any type of other arbitrary foods which may normally seem to be completely benign. In truth, it’s something everyone parents fear. While you are grumbling about peanut spread, what if the apprehension of that parent praying their child does not accidentally ingest or even come in contact with the meals that could land them in the clinic, or worse, while they are at school or out in the world? In a less serious example, I did not choose to break out in painful acne all over my back whenever I actually eat dairy. While others would not choose to experience terrible gas and bloating when eating foods with gluten, sugar, soy, and so on. I know the idea may seem to be that folks are using food avoidance as a diet plan or other regimen besides a true food allergy, but give them the benefit for the doubt. All of us in another level would choose to be capable to eat anything we desired if given the ability. Oh how We would LOVE to eat a bit of cheesecake without paying a price. Or really, just to have a basic latte. Or buy a thick chocolate chip sandwich packed with high quality spread. Great, now my oral cavity is watering, and We digress.

You might be wondering what the distinctions between food allergies, food intolerances and food sensitivities are, anyhow. Let me break it down real quick so you can an improved sense of where people are coming from.

Food Allergic reaction: This is by much the most serious. This really is an immune-modulated reaction related to the IgE antibody. The undigested lactose goes into the digestive tract and then produces annoying gas and bloating. Staying away from dairy or taking dental Lactase usually solves the problem.
